5 Ways Manasota Key Florida is Unique

The beautiful land mass known as Manasota Key runs 11 miles from north to south. The majority of the Gulf Coast side is beach covered in shells and fossilized shark teeth. Here are 5 unique things about Manasota Key Florida!

Fossilized Shark Tooth Hunting is the beach pastime here on Manasota Key Florida. These fossilized shark teeth are usually 5 - 15 million years old. People walk the beaches with sand sifters also known as "Florida Snow Shovels" to find the teeth in the surf. Many people find hundreds of these in a few hours.

4 Beaches are located on Manasota Key. Manasota Beach is located on the north end. 3 miles south lies Blind Pass Beach State Park. Travel another 3 miles south to find Englewood Beach. Go to the southern end of Manasota Key to find Stump Pass Beach State Park.

Manasota Key borders the stunning Lemon Bay Estuary. This picturesque inlet is great for kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding. You will often run into dolphins, manatees & pelicans in this popular area!

Stump Pass Beach State Park is like nowhere else in the world. One side is nearly two miles of beach, much of it private and sectioned off, filled with shells and fossilized shark teeth. The other is on the peaceful and quiet Lemon Bay. There is a small parking lot that only fits about 40 vehicles, which limits how crowded the park gets. It costs $3 per vehicle to park but the experience of visiting it is priceless.

We had a species of mouse go extinct here. The Chadwick Beach Cotton Mouse is presumed extinct after 15 specimens were collected on Englewood Beach (then Chadwick Beach) in 1938 and then no one has reported one ever again. Possible causes include deforestation, wild cats & mouse traps.
